The World’s Top Tips for

Pinnacle Studio Video Editing software

(with some Avid Liquid snippets)

Set-Up Tips

Before installing ANY Studio product, you are advised to close down

all other running programs: press CTRL-ALT-DEL and 'END TASK'

for each running program in turn EXCEPT for EXPLORER (which is actually

Windows itself!) and SYSTRAY.

Set-up tips  for all systems (except where stated)

HOW TO CHECK A SOUND CARD IS DIRECTX COMPATIBLE

This tip comes from Jaap Meeuwsen, of The Netherlands. He suggests a way to check your sound card works OK with DirectX - because if it doesn't, you won't get much joy, sound-wise, from Studio. I've added a screen shot, to show what you should be looking for...

Here's a tip for people who have problems with their sound card.

If you have DIRECT X on your computer, (which you should have) use the 'Find' option on the START menu to locate a program called DxDiag.exe  and then double click on it, to run it. Alternatively, you can go to Start>Run and type DxDiag into the entry box, and press OK.  You should see something like this...

DirectX1.gif (36713 bytes)

Click on the Sound tab, the click on the Test DirectSound button, and you'll be taken through a series of checks that will put your sound card through its paces. If you hear a strange error in one or more tests, you can count on it that the soundcard does not work well with Studio.

Similarly, click on the Music tab, then click on the Test DirectXMusic button. Again - follow the on-screen instructions. Any problems - and that means the sound card is a no-no.

The only solution is to buy another sound card.

Thanks for that tip, Jaap. It could save a lot of people from wondering...

HOW TO CHECK FOR SYSTEM RESOURCE CONFLICTS

Before installing any Studio software it is advisable to ensure that there are no resource conflicts. You can do this as follows:

1. Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel.

2. Double-click on System

3. Select Device Manager.

4. If there are any yellow exclamation points, question marks or red X's these need to be looked at to determine what is causing the problem. Do not install Studio until all resources issues have been resolved.

- Exclamation marks are usually conflicts.

- Question marks are usually drivers that are not loaded properly

- Red X's are devices that are usually disabled (by the user)

If there are any problems, installing Studio software won't help, and will probably aggravate the situation. Contact your PC/device vendor for advice on how to resolve the conflicts: I cannot help with conflict problems. Sorry.
