THREE JOHN W MANTLE FILMS,   John Mantle was a prolific amateur film-maker with a number of awards to his credit   The three films on this DVD were digitised from 16 mm films he made during the 1930s.   You can’t build without bricks is a story-type documentary and appeal for funds about an extension to a local hospital, and gives an excellent insight into the workings of a hospital during the thirties.   Safer Beckenham, made with the co-operation of the Beckenham Safety Committee,  shows what happens when an inconsiderate road user of the thirties decides to ignore the early editions of the Highway Code.  The third film Know Your Kent provides a fascinating 1930s glimpse of various villages and places of interest in Kent.

You Can’t Build Without Bricks

Safer Beckenham

Know Your Kent

BECKENHAM REMEMBERED is a two DVD set. The first DVD is a re-edited version of a digitally converted 1930s silent film ‘Greater Beckenham’, with added material and a commentary based on the original film-maker’s notes and our own research.  It shows in great detail many aspects of life in Beckenham during its

Charter year - covering a diverse variety of events  and places including road building,  recycling methods (yes -

even in those days!),  the installation and usage of electricity supplies,  the fire brigade at work, life in

maternity  homes,  hospitals,  children’s clinics and schools,  parks and sporting occasions, and

transport.  There are also classic views of  places like the Chinese Garage shortly after it was built,

and Beckenham cinema and high street .  In short -  a true reflection of Beckenham and its people

in the mid 1930s.   This movie runs for an engrossing 48 minutes.

The second DVD is a compilation of short Beckenham related films , also from Bromley Archives.

It covers  the The opening of Beckenham Town Hall,  The 1937 Coronation celebrations,  a Mayor’s

World War 2 Battleship appeal, the downfall of the Crystal Palace tower and a Charity appeal by a well

known actor of the day - Claude Hulbert.  This compilation runs for just under 20 minutes.

Price    The two DVD set costs £10 plus £2 to cover p&p. To order please click on the ORDER FORM
